I feel that while few americans actually read the bible, its at the center of a lot of western literature. Are there any interesting books on the bible that are not neccesarily for christians, just for people looking to understand it as a part of western culture?

    There are many interesting books written by scholars associated with The Westar Institute. They are NOT fundamentalists and often write on both the misinterpretations as well as more realistic interpretations of the Bible.
    I particularly like Dominic Crossan.

    You know what you could try doing – reading the bible and as you go through, write down notes on it of how ridiculous it is.
    My friend does it and its quite funny. The bible contradicts itself alot…
